In an article published on Orient XXI, Omar Brouksy highlights « a clever maneuver » by the Moroccan government to push through the normalization of relations with Israel. According to him, the Moroccan authorities traded what the majority of Moroccans consider a « sacred cause, » the Western Sahara, for another « sacred cause, » the Palestinian question.

For the Moroccan journalist in exile in France, the « significant Hamas attack in the heart of Israel on October 7, 2023, is not a rupture but a turning point that will deeply affect the praised Israeli-Moroccan honeymoon, endorsed by both the United States and the European Union. »

Recalling that the royal palace dismantled the Islamist party after forcing it to sign the Abraham Accords, other Islamists, those of the Justice and Charity Association, seized the opportunity on October 7 to assert themselves as the « only possible Islamist choice » after the electoral and political failure of the PJD.

In an effort to reclaim the ground lost by the PJD, the Moroccan association opposing the title of « Commander of the Faithful » held by the King of Morocco « does not hesitate to use the Palestinian issue and normalization as redeployment vectors to rally even the disappointed PJD supporters, but also as leverage to challenge the monarchical regime and its religious legitimacy – King Mohammed VI being both Commander of the Faithful and president of the Al-Quds Committee for Palestine. »

Brouksy expresses his astonishment at the « silence of [countries] when South Africa brings the case » of the Israeli aggression against Gaza to the International Court of Justice. « At the same time, the Liaison Office, a Moroccan delegation in Tel Aviv, announces the resumption of all consular services from January 22, after their suspension on October 19, 2023, when the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to evacuate its liaison office in Rabat in response to the strong mobilization of Moroccans. »

« Even silence from the royal palace, » he notes, « except for a laconic statement dated October 17, the day after the Israeli army bombed the Al-Maamdani hospital, causing several hundred Palestinian deaths and injuries in Gaza: ‘The Kingdom of Morocco reiterates its call for civilians to be protected by all parties and not to be targeted. His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, president of the Al-Quds Committee, emphasizes the urgent need to unite the efforts of the international community to end hostilities as soon as possible, respect international humanitarian law, and work to prevent the region from plunging into a new escalation and tensions.' »

Omar Brouksy is the author of several books on Morocco:

-« Les enquêtes interdites » (2021)

-« La république de Sa Majesté. France-Maroc, relations dangereuses » (2015)

-« Mohammed VI, derrière le masque » (2014).

A former AFP correspondent assaulted by the police, Omar Brouksy was forced to exile in France to escape the repression of Mohammed VI’s regime. His three books have led to persecution, even in France. He is among the many activists targeted for surveillance through the Israeli Pegasus software.
